TODAY IN HISTORY

Today in history i learned learned about the rise and fall of society after WWI. During the rise many women became more independent and got the right to vote.

They had technology advances in Airplanes, radios, and film.

Then the fall. Basically the U.S. loaned out all its money and then everybody here went broke. The stock market collasped and the banks lost all their money and all the people's money who deposited it into their bank. That was the depression.

A Tail of True Love

It is December 13, 10313. Two babies are born. The first, a girl, to a mother and father named Christina and Joseph. They know instantly that she is destined for greatness and name her Stephanie. The second was a boy, to King Rex and Queen Regina. They had finally produced an heir. He was to be called Prince Alexander or Alex for short.

Stephanie grew up with her mother in a small cottage on the outskirts of the town near the king and queen’s castle. One day, while helping her mother cook in the kitchen, a man in a suit of armor came to the door with horrible news. Stephanie’s father had been killed in battle by an enemy night, for you see, Stephanie’s father had been recruited on the night of her birth. They had written letters to each other many times and she was now fifteen years. Stephanie was so devastated that she ran as fast as she could into the forest to a pond, about as big as a large swimming pool, and sat on a rock weeping. Her tears rolled down her face and off her nose and chin into the crystal blue water. Then she felt a tap on her shoulder. She looked up to see the face of a boy with golden eyes and dark hair looking down at her with as warm a smile as could ever be smiled.

“What’s wrong?” he said, his voice so calming that she herself couldn’t even remember.

Suddenly she did and all she wanted to do was cry until she couldn’t cry anymore.

“My father has been killed by an enemy knight in battle. I hadn’t even had the chance to meet him.” She said between sobs.

“I’m very sorry.” said the boy. “I wish there was something that I could do.”

“You can go away!” she shouted.

“And what good would that do. How dare you even talk to me in such a tone. Do you know who I am?” he shouted back. He had lost the calming voice that he had spoken in before.

Stephanie became frightened by the boy and mumbled the word “no”. The boy saw that she was frightened, sat down beside her, and took up her hands. He calmed himself and began to speak.

“Dear, sweet girl,” he said kissing her hands,” I only meant that instead of giving up, use this to make yourself stronger. Grow from this tragedy and learn from it and I am sorry that I frightened you.” His voice was calm and sweet again as he spoke. “I am Prince Alexander of King Rex and Queen Regina and who may I have the wonderful pleasure of introducing myself to?”

At this Stephanie turned white and pulled her hands away, almost falling into the pond in doing so.

“Your highness, I apologize greatly for talking to you in such a manner. I shouldn’t even be talking to you at all. I am just a simple farm girl in your great kingdom. Please mercy me and let me leave.” She said quickly.

“Why do you wish to leave? I do not care if you are a farm girl or even a slave. A person is still a person, no matter what. Do not be scared to talk to me because of who I am. Now, tell me your name.” said the prince.

She looked at his warm smile and his welcoming face and said, “Stephanie, my name is Stephanie.”

“A beautiful name for a beautiful girl. It suits you well.” said the prince. “And please, call me Alex. Your highness is so… so… serious.”

Stephanie laughed at this and from that moment on they became best friends. Of course they were friends in secret, for if the king and queen found out, Stephanie would never be allowed to see Alex again. Everyday after, Stephanie and Alex would sneak away to the forest to sit and talk and play by the pond where they had first met. They confined in each other all of their secrets and worries and troubles, their great moments and funny ones. There was nothing that they didn’t tell each other. Before long a year had passed and they were still best of friends, but something else was happening. Something of a spark between them had begun and one day while sitting by the pond he began to speak.

“Stephanie, do you think of me as a friend?” He said with a look of seriousness and curiosity.

Stephanie looked at him and blushed. “Why do you ask?”she said.

Alex feeling as if he had created a new shade of red with his face began to stutter and mumble.

“Because I… I… I…” He stood up and began to fidget with his collar and the back of his neck.

“Because why?” She said knowing that she was teasing him and hoping that she was right about what he was going to say.

“Because I like you, more than a friend would.” He said and began to turn an even brighter shade of red as a drop of sweat ran down the side of his face.

Stephanie stood up and took his hand. She looked him in the eyes and leaned forward to kiss him. Alex was shocked, happy, and confused all at the same time.

“Does that answer your question?” said Stephanie blushing.

Alex and Stephanie had liked each other for a while but now the other knew. They had fallen in love, a secret love that only they knew about, that only they could know about. They couldn’t have been happier than at that moment. They decided that they would be lovers and that they would run away together when they knew that the time was right, for they knew that this would never be allowed in the kingdom and that if this got out, Stephanie would be put to death. When the sun started to fall, Stephanie and Alex said goodbye and went home. When Stephanie got home she walked inside and saw a man sitting with her mother at the table. Something was wrong though. The look in her mothers eyes was some how different, they were not hers. She was under a spell.

“Who are you and what have you done to my mother?” Stephanie shouted to the man.

The man looked up at her and began to grin. “My name is Marx, I have done nothing to your mother, yet, and you are going to help me unless you want the king to know about your little secret and if you want your mother to be unharmed.”

“What are you talking about? What do you mean not yet? And what do you mean you know?” she said beginning to get scared.

“I know about your little secret meetings with Prince Alexander and I know that he has fallen in love with you. Prince Alexander is the heir to the thrown and must marry. He will be with nobody but you and if he can’t have you then he would die. That is why I am going to take you away and if you refuse or if you try to escape, your mother will perish and you will never see her again.” said Marx.

“But why do you want to do this to him?” said Stephanie. “What has he done to you?”

“It is not him that I want to suffer, although I do enjoy it. It is his father, my brother. You see, if the prince does not marry and does not take a queen then he must forfeit the right to the throne. Then I can be king.” said Marx.

“How dare you. It is not yours to have. It belongs to Alex.” said Stephanie.

“Not for long. Soon it will be mine and so will this kingdom.”He let out an evil laugh so vile that it would even send chills down your back if you had heard it.

Suddenly Marx stopped and looked at Stephanie. His eyes were evil and empty like two tiny black holes that sucked in anything that brought joy or happiness and that is just what they did. They took Stephanie’s happiness and swallowed it whole. Marx stood up and grabbed Stephanie by the top of her arm, wrapping his cold boney fingers around it. He then pulled a handkerchief out of his pocket and put it over her mouth. Then, nothing but darkness. Marx had made her pass out and become unconscious. Marx quickly tied her and her mother up with ropes and put then in the back of his horse drawn carriage. Then they were off. Marx’s first stop was at the pond that Stephanie and Alex would meet. He nailed to a tree a note that said Stephanie never wanted to see him again and then left for the town of Valagess. Here he would hide Stephanie and her mother until he had the throne from Alex. Then he would do away with then to hide all of the evidence.

The next day when Alex snuck away to the pond to meet with Stephanie he found the note. Unfortunately for Marx Alex realized three things. The first was that Stephanie could not write and could not have written the note herself. He considered that maybe she had someone else to do it for her but knew that she knew nobody who could write either. He also knew that Stephanie loved him and would never want to break his heart. Last, he saw that there were very large footprints in the mud that led to a series of wagon tracks. At that instant he knew that they had been found out. He rode as fast as he could to Stephanie’s house and found that the door was open and that nobody was there. He knew then that she had been kidnapped. He did not know why or by who but he knew the general direction that they where going because of the wagon tracks and was determined to get his love back. When he did he would tell his father and make her his queen whether his father approved or not. He loved Stephanie and nothing was going to get in the way of him being with her. He rode on his horse all the way to the town of Valagess not knowing that Stephanie was there only that the tracks had led him there and he would search the town up and down until he found her. Fortunately for him he was only a few minutes into town when he saw his Uncle, Marx, who looked very suspicious, walk into a barn. He got off his horse and tied the reins to a nearby tree. Then he quickly but quietly ran towards the barn. He put his ear up next to it to listen. Inside he heard Marx tell his entire plan to Stephanie. He had heard enough. He burst through the door and drew his sword.

“Stop, I order you to release Stephanie and her mother. You will not take my throne and you will not get away with this.” said Alex.

“Oh, but I will.” Marx pulled a dagger from his boot and before Alex could get to him he drove the dagger into Stephanie’s heart three times to make sure that she was dead. Blood poured out of her wounds and stained her clothes red.

“NOOOOOOO!” Alex screamed. “STEPHANIE, NOOOOO! I’LL KILL YOU MARX!”

Alex ran at full speed and swung his sword at Marx, cutting his head completely off. The barn was covered in blood and the spell that Marx had put on Stephanie’s mother, Christina was broken. When Christina saw what Marx had done to her daughter she screamed in horror.

“NOOOOO!!” Christina yelled as tears streamed down her face. Stephanie was dead.

“Wait, you can still save her, but you must hurry. Take her body and bring it to the witch Candice of Darcoff Mountain. There you must go through a series of three tests to bring her back to life, but you must hurry. She only has till sunset on the third day to be brought back to life or she will be lost forever.” said Christina.

Alex, still with tears, took up Stephanie’s body and took her all the way to Darcoff Mountain. He arrived by horseback in front of the entrance to the cave that Candice lived in by the end of the second day. He took her blood stained body and walked into the entrance of the cave. Suddenly a three headed dog jumped out of the darkness toward Alex. The dog was extremely angry and Alex did not know why, but he would not let this stop him. He carefully set Stephanie’s body down behind him and began to draw his sword until he saw that the reason for that dogs anger was that he or rather she was limping and the reason for the limp was a thorn in its foot. He put his sword back and kneeled down to show the dog that he did not want to hurt it. He reached into his pocket and pulled forth some bread that he tossed to the dog and when she was not looking reached for the thorn and pulled it out. She winced and yelped until she realized what he had done and then licked his face until it was raw. The dog then left and ran into the cave. Alex picked up Stephanie’s body again and continued walking into the cave. He then came to an area that had a gate and a riddle. The riddle read:

“I have a mouth but cannot talk; I always run but never walk. What am i?”

Alex looked at the riddle and thought for a long time. When he had finally thought of an answer it was the middle of the third day. He walked up to the gate and shouted as loud as he could.

“You are a river.”

The gate began to open and Alex continued to walk. Finally he came to a bird that looked almost like a vulture but more deformed. The vulture spoke to him.

“What is it that you want?”

“I seek the witch Candice to bring my love back to life.” said Alex.

“What are you willing to give up to have her back?” said the bird.

“Anything. I will do whatever it takes to get her back.” said Alex.

“Fine, then you will give me your throne and you can have her back.” said the vulture.

“What do you mean give you my throne? You are but a talking bird.” Alex said looking very curiously at the vulture.

“Do you accept or not?” screeched the bird.

“Yes, if you will bring her back.” said Alex as he hugged Stephanie’s body and a tear ran down each side of his face.
Suddenly, the vulture transformed into the witch Candice.

“You would sacrifice everything you have and your entire kingdom to bring her back. That is true love. You may keep you throne and you may have Stephanie back.” said the witch.

Candice walked towards Alex as he held Stephanie in his arms and touched her for head. Alex looked at Stephanie and saw that her wounds had disappeared and the blood was gone. She began breathing again and opened her eyes to see Alex looking down at her. She threw her arms around him and began to cry.

“You saved me.” she said.

“I will never let you go and I will never leave you again. I am taking you back to the castle with me and I will make you my queen.” said Alex. Stephanie saw that his words were true and with this they rode back to the castle.

When Alex and Stephanie arrived Alex burst through the doors and explained everything to his father and mother. He told his father that he was to marry Stephanie whether he approved or not and that she was to be his queen. The king saw that Alex would not give up until he got his way and gave Alex and Stephanie his blessings. He could see that his son had found true love and that nothing would ever separate them. At this Alex ordered that the wedding be held the next day and it was. Alex and Stephanie were married and ruled together for many years. They had three sons and one daughter that they named Dylan, Chase, Alexander II, and Elizabeth. They lived happily ever after and Alex and Stephanie were never separated again.
